Abstract

The purpose of this study is to estimate the preventive effect of water fluoridation on dental caries.
Dental survey had been done for 537 6-year-old children in fluoridated area and 532 .6-year-old children in non-fluoridated area in 1991. After 5 years of follow-up period, the survey was done again for 142 children of fluoridated area and 260 children in non-fluoridated area. DMFS increment of all surfaces, pits and fissures and smooth surfaces during 5 years was calculated and compared between fluoridated and non-fluoridated area.

The obtained results were as follows:
1. Mean DMFS of overall surfaces was reduced 35.4% by water fluoridation.
2. Mean DMFS of smooth surfaces was reduced 67.9% by water fluoridation.
3. Mean DMFS of pits and fissures was reduced 25.6% by water fluoridation.
